Make Your Poolish – Making poolish early in the morning will help the yeast to start working and it will add more flavor to the buns.
In a small bowl stir together the ingredients to make the poolish, cover with a kitchen towel and let it start to work for about 30 minutes.
Mix In Remaining Ingredients – Add the rest of the ingredients to the Stand Mixer bowl and the poolish, use the kneading hook and start kneading your dough on low speed (2).
As you knead your dough for the first two minutes, add the water one spoon at a time, until you see the dough is starting to form and it doesn’t need more water, keep kneading your dough for another two minutes and add the salt.
Knead your dough for about 10 minutes on low speed in the Stand Mixer, or until you see the dough has formed a ball in the kneading hook and it looks smooth and soft.
First Rise – Add some olive oil in a clean bowl, shape the dough in a ball and place it in the oiled bowl, cover the dough ball with some olive oil and cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel, rise it at room temperature for about 1 hour.
Pre-Shape Your Burger Buns – Divide the dough in four or five portions, and preshape the buns on a lightly floured surface and let them rest for 10 minutes.
Shape Your Burger Buns – Shape the buns and place them on a baking pan covered with parchment paper, when placing the buns on the baking pan, with your hand push down gently each bun, this will help them to get a better shape.
Second Rise – Cover the buns on the baking pan with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for about 30 minutes.
Egg Wash And Bake – Preheat your oven to 380 F (190C) and prepare the egg wash with one egg yolk and one tablespoon of milk, egg wash the buns just before you take the buns in the oven.
Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top, or your favorite topping.
Note, on the image below, I egg washed some of the buns, I left two buns with no egg wash and I sprinkle some flour on them, this will add a different texture and a good taste to the buns.
Bake the buns for 12 to 15 minutes, you need to keep an eye while your buns are in the oven as every oven is different.

I’m more of a cook, and not much of a baker. My wife on the other hand, is a baker, and would likely love this recipe. My question is about price. I think this will be a welcome addition to our baking if it helps pricewise. At the very least, it might be worth it, compared to buying organic buns at the store.
Hy Fyne
When we talk about if baking our own homemade Burger Buns could save some money or not, I might not be the best help here as I do all the baking at home, the main reason is because I really love the taste of homemade bread and when I get a burger with a comercial made bun, it doesn’t taste good at all to me, but in general, bread and buns price at the grocery store is higher, but when baking at home, you need to keep in mind the time to prepare the dough and baking, if we take a look at it, baking our own bread at home could be expensive, but when we talk about the quality of the ingredientes and the taste and freshness, baking your own bred will be always better.
Hope this helps to know if it worths to make the burger buns at home or not.
